10 suspended Zamfara lawmakers protest in Abuja, call for intervention

Must read

Ten lawmakers from the Zamfara State House of Assembly have taken their protest to Abuja, decrying what they describe as their “illegal” suspension.

The legislators, who marched to the National Assembly, argued that their suspension poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Ibrahim Tuku read a statement jointly signed by all the suspended lawmakers, stating that key decisions taken by the remaining 14 lawmakers—including the passage of the 2025 Appropriation Bill—were unlawful and should be considered null and void.

The suspended lawmakers, comprising six members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four from the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged the National Assembly to intervene in their case.

They expressed confidence that lawmakers at the federal level would step in to resolve the crisis in Zamfara.

“We have been subjected to undue and illegal suspension simply because we refused to be rubber stamps for the executive,” Tuku stated.

The lawmakers specifically called for the reversal of the Zamfara Assembly’s decision to declare vacant the seat of Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata-Mafara South State Constituency.

“We submitted a petition to the National Assembly, and they assured us that they would investigate the matter.

However, we are yet to receive any response, and we are still waiting for their intervention,” Tuku added.

The protest highlights the deepening political tensions in Zamfara State, as the affected lawmakers continue to seek redress at the national level.
