NLC vows to enforce minimum wage implementation by March on defaulting States

Must read

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to take strict measures to ensure that states and employers fully implement the national minimum wage and its consequential adjustments before the end of March.

Mohammed Ibrahim, President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and NLC’s National Internal Auditor, made this known on Wednesday at a one-day National Leadership Retreat for SSANU’s National Administrative Committee members in Abuja.

“The national minimum wage has been signed into law, and payments should have started nationwide,” Ibrahim stated.

“But many states and institutions have manipulated the process, offering arbitrary figures instead of proper implementation.”

He warned that any state or employer failing to comply would face consequences, as labour laws provide mechanisms to enforce workers’ rights.

Addressing challenges within the union, Ibrahim criticized some members for sabotaging strike actions. “Unfortunately, some of our members engage in blackmail and underhand dealings to weaken our struggles,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of continuous staff training and increased funding for universities.

The retreat was attended by former NLC President Ayuba Wabba, former SSANU President Chief Promise Adeusi, and the Director-General of the Institute of Mentoring and Coaching, Rotimi Mathew.
