Gov. Makinde implements Aso Oke dress code for Oyo civil servants on Thursdays

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has introduced a new dress code for civil and public servants, directing them to wear traditional native attire, with a touch of Aso Oke fabric, every Thursday.

This new policy complements the existing tradition of wearing native attire on Fridays.

The directive was issued through a circular from the Office of the Head of Service to ministry and agency heads on January 27, 2025.

It emphasized the cultural and economic significance of the new policy, stating, “Every Thursday and Friday, our workforce will become ambassadors of tradition and catalysts for economic transformation.”

The circular highlights that the initiative is not only a dress code but a strategic effort to reinforce the state’s cultural identity while uplifting local economies.

It aims to promote the preservation of Yoruba traditions, empower local artisans, and strengthen the informal economy.

Governor Makinde explained that the new policy would support local weavers, dyers, and tailors, creating jobs, reducing unemployment, and improving the livelihoods of artisans.

He added that the initiative is expected to drive demand for Aso Oke fabrics, boost tourism, and contribute to inclusive development in the state.
