Court okays former Governor’s request for overseas medical treatment amid fraud trial

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has granted permission to Darius Ishaku, the former Governor of Taraba State, to travel abroad for medical treatment.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Sylvanus Oriji on Wednesday, allows Ishaku to visit Arjam in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a routine medical check-up.

Ishaku, currently facing trial over alleged N27 billion money laundering charges, had sought the court’s approval to travel, citing deteriorating health.

His lawyer, Paul Ogbole (SAN), argued that his medical condition required urgent attention.

The application was filed under Sections 6(6) and 41(1) of the amended 1999 Constitution.

However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), represented by Rotimi Oyedepo, opposed the request, expressing concerns over the unspecified duration of Ishaku’s stay in the UAE.

Despite the EFCC’s objections, Justice Oriji ruled in favor of the former governor, noting that Ishaku had complied with his bail condition, which required court approval before traveling abroad.

Ishaku’s trial, scheduled to continue on March 17, 2025, involves charges of money laundering, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and alleged diversion of public funds.

During the proceedings, the EFCC’s fifth witness, Ismail Lawal, testified that he received cash from multiple individuals on Ishaku’s instructions, including payments to the ex-governor’s personal staff and expenses related to his properties.

Previously, the court had granted Ishaku bail under the condition of a N150 million bond.
