The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a couple accused of child trafficking after allegedly selling their six-year-old daughter for N450,000.
During a press briefing in Uyo on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, revealed that the suspects, Christiana Ibanga and her partner, Inyene Akpan, were arrested in Abuja on January 14.
According to John, the pair admitted to selling their daughter in May 2024 with the assistance of an accomplice, Saviour Aniedi.
“Based on credible intelligence, our officers swiftly took action, leading to the arrest of the suspects in Abuja on January 14,” John stated.
“During questioning, they confessed to selling their child with Aniedi’s help.”
Further investigations took law enforcement officers to Aba, Abia State, on January 23 to locate the buyer and recover the missing child.
In addition to the child trafficking case, the police also detained three individuals for allegedly engaging in illicit drug sales.
One of the suspects, Happiness George, was caught distributing hemp and other illegal substances.
Meanwhile, Queen Umoren and Joy Chima were arrested at a brothel in Ikot Ebong village, Odoro Ikot clan, for possession of illicit drugs.
John issued a stern warning to criminals in the state, urging them to desist from unlawful activities or risk severe legal consequences.
