Sowore appears in court over cybercrime charges [PHOTOS]

Must read

Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment over remarks he made on social media, where he referred to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun as an “illegal IG.”

Sowore is set to appear before Justice Liman at the Federal High Court today (Wednesday).

The activist is facing three charges under Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc..) Act of 2015, which was amended in 2024. Court documents, marked FCH/ABJ/23/25, indicate that the allegations stem from messages he posted on his verified Twitter account, in which he described Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP.”

Authorities claim that these posts were false and intended to incite disorder, accusing Sowore of attempting to undermine police authority.

His legal team, led by Marshall Abubakar, has acknowledged the charges and confirmed that the case will proceed in court.

Meanwhile, political activist Deji Adeyanju has criticized the prosecution, calling it an abuse of legal proceedings and vowing a robust defence.

Sowore’s legal troubles intensified after his arrest on Monday, following his refusal to accept police-imposed bail conditions.

His detention is linked to allegations of obstructing public officers and cyberstalking.

The case also follows recent tensions between Sowore and Nigerian authorities, particularly after a viral video he shared in December accusing officers of extortion at a Lagos checkpoint.
