LP slams Atiku over N50m bribe allegation, denies being under APC’s payroll

Must read

The Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday, January 29, rejected claims made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that opposition party leaders were on the payroll of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku had alleged that the APC was paying N50 million to leaders of various opposition parties to prevent them from fulfilling their roles in opposing the ruling party.

However, in a statement issued by Labour Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh, the party denied any knowledge of such a bribe, asserting that its leadership had never received any money from individuals, groups, organizations, or governments that are not members of the LP.

Ifoh expressed surprise and disbelief over the allegations, stating that it was inappropriate for Atiku to make sweeping accusations against the entire opposition without providing credible evidence beyond “gossip” from an unnamed source.

He went on to emphasize that the LP has consistently remained a strong and vocal opposition, always speaking truth to power.

“The leadership has not received any salary from any external source. Salaries are public knowledge and can be easily verified,” Ifoh explained.

“We advise Atiku to be more careful in making such broad claims. He should speak for himself and his party.”

Ifoh further stated that opposition parties are essential for sustaining a nation’s democracy and called on Atiku to provide solid evidence to back up his claims.
