A 40-year-old woman, identified as Chioma Success, lost her life after being crushed by a truck that lost control at the Eleme Junction section of the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
Eyewitnesses reported that Chioma was seated in a tricycle, commonly known as Keke, when the incident occurred.
The truck, reportedly unable to brake, rammed into the tricycle. The Keke driver managed to escape moments before the collision, but Chioma was fatally struck.
An eyewitness recounted, “The truck was coming from Oyigbo around 9 a.m. when it lost its brakes. It hit the side of the Keke where the woman was seated, and the impact was devastating.”
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident, explaining that the truck driver had attempted to avoid a stationary vehicle before losing control.
“On January 27, 2025, at about 9:00 a.m., a truck with registration number XP 633 JJ, loaded and driven by a male, was heading from Oyigbo towards Rumukrusi.
Upon approaching Eleme Junction, the driver attempted to dodge a stationary vehicle, lost control, and veered off the road.
The truck climbed a pavement, knocking down Chioma Success, who was standing nearby. She died on the spot,” the police statement read.
The police further disclosed that the truck driver has been arrested, and the vehicle has been impounded for inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
The victim’s body has been deposited at the morgue, and the case has been transferred to the state traffic department for further investigation.
