Lawmaker reflects on viral assault incident, says he’s now friends with driver

Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has revealed that he is now on good terms with Stephen Abuwatseya, the e-hailing driver involved in a highly publicized altercation with him in 2024.

In a video that sparked widespread criticism last year, Ikwechegh was captured assaulting Abuwatseya and threatening to make him “disappear.”

The incident reportedly began when the driver asked the lawmaker to step outside his residence to retrieve a package.

Speaking about the matter during an interview with Channels Television, Ikwechegh described the confrontation as regrettable, saying it provided an opportunity for personal growth and reconciliation.

“The incident was unfortunate, but I see it as a chance to build a relationship with the young man. Today, we are friends.

“The case went to court, but it was dismissed due to lack of merit,” he explained.

Ikwechegh defended his initial reaction, stating that he felt his home’s sanctity had been disrespected, though he acknowledged that his behaviour did not reflect his character.

“Abuwatseya is now a friend. I’ve even connected with his bishop and pastor, and I’ve made new friends through this experience. It’s behind us now,” he added.
