Kaduna Gov Sani defends peace deal with bandits

Must read

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has defended his administration’s decision to sign a peace agreement with bandits, stating that the move was driven by the need to protect lives and restore stability in the state.

The peace deal, facilitated over six months with the involvement of traditional rulers and religious leaders, led to the release of approximately 200 captives held by the bandits.

Speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Monday, Governor Sani emphasized that no money was paid to the bandits during the negotiations.

“We made it clear that no financial rewards would be part of the agreement—not a single Naira was given to them. Our focus is solely on ensuring the safety of our citizens and achieving lasting peace,” he said.

Sani noted that the peace initiative has already resulted in significant improvements, with increased farming and business activities reported across Kaduna State.

He reassured residents that the government remains committed to maintaining the agreement and working with key stakeholders to secure long-term peace.

While the peace deal has faced criticism from some quarters, with detractors viewing it as a sign of weakness, the governor defended the decision as a necessary step to protect lives.

“As a leader, I am bound by my oath of office to safeguard the lives and property of Kaduna’s citizens. If making peace with bandits will prevent further loss of life, then it is a decision I am willing to stand by,” Governor Sani stated.
