Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of offering N50 million to opposition party leaders to weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.
Atiku made this claim during a national conference on strengthening democracy held in Abuja on Monday, organized by various civic groups.
He warned that the country’s democracy could collapse if immediate corrective measures are not taken.
“I want to make this public. I met with leaders of a political party in the opposition, and they openly admitted that this government gives them N50 million each,” Atiku disclosed.
Expressing concern over the integrity of opposition parties, he added, “Some of you here may already be beneficiaries of the N50 million from the APC government. Do we genuinely want to fight for democracy?”
Atiku criticized the current state of democratic values in Nigeria, labeling the National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” for the government and questioning the impartiality of the nation’s electoral commission.
He also referenced Turkey’s electoral process, where officials upheld democratic principles by refusing to declare a president-elect who failed to meet the vote threshold, urging Nigeria to adopt similar standards of integrity.
Calling for unity among opposition parties, Atiku reflected on his personal sacrifices in the fight for democracy, recounting an attempt on his life, the seizure of his assets, and periods of exile.
He emphasized the urgent need for collective action to preserve the nation’s democratic foundations.
