Troops eliminate over 60 insurgents, three commanders, in Borno clearance operation

The Nigerian military has confirmed the elimination of 70 insurgents, including three high-ranking terrorist commanders, during a nine-day clearance operation at the Timbuktu Triangle in Borno State.

The operation, carried out by troops under Operation Hadin Kai, aimed to dismantle the terrorist stronghold.

According to Major General Edward Buba, spokesperson for Defence Media Operations, the offensive began on January 16 and involved a three-pronged approach to tackle the insurgents.

The targeted commanders were identified as Talha (Special Forces Commander), Malam Umar (Operations Commander), and Abu Yazeed (Brigade Commander).

Despite the successful outcome, the operation came at a significant cost, with 22 soldiers losing their lives and several others sustaining injuries.

“Terrorists employed various tactics, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide bombers, and drones, to counter the advance of our troops,” Buba stated.

However, the troops, well-versed in the insurgents’ methods, successfully neutralized their attempts, including shooting down amateur drones.

The Defence Headquarters emphasized the need for media restraint in publishing the names of fallen soldiers until their families are officially notified.

The military assured the public that the operation remains ongoing and further updates will be provided as progress is made.

The Timbuktu Triangle, described as a key terrorist enclave, has been a focal point in the fight against insurgency in the region.
