Human rights activist and former Nigerian presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has rejected a bail condition set by the police requiring him to present a Level 17 permanent secretary as a guarantor for his release.
Sowore, who was detained on Monday morning by the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja, faces charges of hindering police officers from performing their duties and resisting arrest.
In a statement shared on his Twitter page on Monday afternoon, Sowore announced his decision to reject the bail terms, describing them as a “joke.”
He wrote: “I have rejected a bail condition asking me to present a level 17 Permanent Secretary, instead I have offered to remain in police custody pending when the joke is over with. #RevolutionNow.”
Sowore’s arrest and detention have sparked reactions on social media, with supporters questioning the rationale behind the stringent bail conditions.
His legal team is reportedly preparing to challenge the charges and the imposed bail conditions in court.
Sowore, a prominent critic of the Nigerian government and founder of Sahara Reporters, has been a vocal advocate for democratic reforms and accountability in the country.
His #RevolutionNow campaign has drawn widespread attention and controversy, leading to multiple legal battles with authorities in the past.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Nigerian police regarding Sowore’s rejection of the bail condition.
