Authorities in Anambra State have arrested four individuals in connection with the horrific death of a 74-year-old woman, who was allegedly burned alive while in her wheelchair.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning in the Ifitedunu community.

Among those detained is 21-year-old Chinyere Ekwenugo, who is accused of conspiring with others to commit the heinous act.

The additional suspects are Uzochukwu Okeke, 47; Fidel Anayo, 60; and Ikenna Anene, 54, all from the Abagana area.

According to a statement by Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Ekwenugo confessed during questioning that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, along with three others, carried out the attack. Igwe is currently on the run.

“They set the victim on fire and even brought a casket to bury her before police operatives intervened,” Ikenga revealed.

The police recovered the charred remains of the victim, her wheelchair, and the casket at the scene. The body has been taken to a morgue for autopsy as investigations continue.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has urged the public to remain calm and assured them of a thorough investigation.

The case has been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
