A dynamite explosion in Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger, has left one person dead and six others injured.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday and was reportedly caused by dynamites stored in the area for mining purposes.
Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the explosion, which caused significant damage to approximately 12 houses in the vicinity.
The victim, identified as Fatima Sadauki, died in the blast, while the six injured individuals were promptly transported to General Hospital Kainji for treatment.
In response to the incident, Niger’s Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Danmamman, ordered an investigation and deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit to assess the scene.
The suspect, responsible for storing the dynamites in the residential area, remains at large.
Authorities have assured that normalcy has returned to the area, with ongoing monitoring in place to prevent further incidents.
