Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has cautioned the Federal Government to avoid meddling in Kano State’s internal matters.
The warning follows a controversial “terror alert” issued by the Kano State Police Command ahead of the Maulud celebration honoring Sheikh Ibrahim Inyass, the spiritual leader of the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order.
In a statement shared via his official X handle, Kwankwaso congratulated the Tijjaniyya Sufi Order on the successful event held at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
He also commended Emir Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for their roles in organizing the event.
However, Kwankwaso criticized the timing and nature of the police alert, labeling it reckless and unprofessional.
He argued that it not only endangered the lives of attendees, including international guests, but also instilled unnecessary fear among the people of Kano.
“This alert jeopardized the success of the gathering and put lives at risk by creating palpable fear,” he said, accusing the police of collaborating with the Federal Government in what he described as its habitual interference in Kano’s affairs.
Kwankwaso warned that issuing false alerts could undermine public trust, making people less likely to take genuine threats seriously in the future.
He also highlighted the negative global impression such actions create for the Nigeria Police Force.
The NNPP leader urged the police to remain professional and avoid being seen as partisan tools in Kano or elsewhere in Nigeria.
He further called on the Federal Government to respect Kano State’s autonomy and refrain from overstepping its bounds.
“For the umpteenth time, I urge the Federal Government to avoid dragging itself into unpleasant situations by further meddling in affairs strictly under the jurisdiction of Kano State,” Kwankwaso concluded.
