Mojisola Meranda officially assumed the role of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 27, 2025, amid unresolved tensions within the legislature.
Her emergence followed the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was reportedly out of the country in the United States when the decision was made.
The impeachment was supported by 32 of the assembly’s 40 lawmakers. However, Obasa has rejected the action, insisting that he remains the rightful Speaker.
In the wake of these events, security around the assembly complex has been significantly tightened. Staff and legislative aides are now required to present valid identification to gain entry, with anyone lacking proper credentials being denied access.
