The Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters in Anambra has arrested four individuals in connection with the brutal murder of a 74-year-old woman in the Ifitedunu area.

The suspects include 21-year-old Chinyere Ekwenugo, who is accused of conspiring with others to set the elderly woman, who was in a wheelchair, on fire.

The other suspects are Uzochukwu Okeke, 47, Fidel Anayo, 60, and Ikenna Anene, 54, all from Abagana.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrests and shared that the crime took place at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

In a statement, Ikenga explained that during questioning, Ekwenugo admitted her involvement in the crime, revealing that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who remains on the run, and three others were responsible for the woman’s death.

The suspects reportedly planned to bury the woman in a casket before law enforcement intervened.

The police recovered the victim’s remains, her wheelchair, and a casket. Efforts are now underway to capture Igwe, the main suspect.

The deceased’s body has been sent for autopsy, and the investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.

Anambra State Police Commissioner Nnaghe Itam has called for calm and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s homicide section for further investigation.
