Lagos Assembly cautions impeached Speaker, Obasa against disruption

Must read

The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, urging him to desist from actions that could disrupt the legislative arm’s operations.

The warning follows Obasa’s recent allegations that his impeachment did not adhere to due process.

In a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, lawmakers reiterated their support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, while reaffirming Obasa’s removal on January 13.

The Assembly emphasized that the impeachment was carried out in accordance with constitutional provisions, underscoring their dedication to good governance and maintaining a constructive relationship with other arms of government.

“Over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are firmly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda,” the statement read.

“We stand by the decision to impeach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and are prepared to defend this decision unequivocally,” it added.

The lawmakers also reminded the public that every member of the Assembly was elected by their respective constituencies and holds the constitutional authority to remove principal officers, including the Speaker.

Olukayode criticized Obasa’s recent actions, describing them as unnecessary and counterproductive. He urged the former Speaker to embrace peace and avoid actions that could create tension.

“I appeal to the former Speaker to adopt a peaceful and harmonious approach, as others have done. Any attempts to destabilize the Assembly will not be tolerated,” he said.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, has been a member of the Assembly since 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his impeachment earlier this month.
