One month after the abduction of Anambra State House of Assembly member, Justice Azuka, lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) in the National Assembly have expressed outrage over the lack of action and communication from the Anambra State government and security agencies.
Azuka, who represents Onitsha North 1 constituency, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on December 24, 2024, while traveling to spend Christmas with his family.
Despite the passage of time, there has been no significant update on efforts to secure his release.
In a statement issued by Afam Ogene, the leader of LP lawmakers in the National Assembly, the caucus condemned the prolonged silence surrounding the incident, describing it as unacceptable and calling for urgent action.
“It is time to restore order in Anambra State, which has alarmingly turned into a haven for criminal activities,” Ogene said.
He criticized Azuka’s colleagues in the State Assembly for failing to hold the government accountable for the search and rescue of their fellow lawmaker.
Ogene lamented the state’s deteriorating security situation, saying, “The level of carnage in Anambra is heart-wrenching. People are living in constant fear due to the rising insecurity.”
He further urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo and security agencies to act swiftly to address the abduction and broader security challenges.
“The crimes reported in the state barely scratch the surface of the alarming reality.
The harrowing experiences of kidnapping survivors highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures,” Ogene added.
