The Kebbi State Government has unveiled plans to strengthen its healthcare sector by recruiting 500 additional health professionals.

The government also plans to integrate 390 staff members previously supported by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) into the state workforce.

Governor Nasir Idris made this announcement on Saturday during the handover ceremony of the NGF/GAVI UNICEF Project in Birnin Kebbi.

“Our administration is committed to hiring 500 new health workers and absorbing 390 GAVI-supported personnel to improve healthcare delivery across the state,” Idris stated.

The governor outlined key investments in the health sector, including the modernization of six General Hospitals and the provision of advanced ambulances to enhance the referral system.

He also noted that the Kebbi State Contributory Health Agency has been strengthened to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on residents.

Additional measures include renovating selected Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and distributing free delivery kits to expectant mothers.

These initiatives aim to align with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) target for 2030, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative.

Governor Idris commended the contributions of development partners, which have significantly improved healthcare delivery in Kebbi over the past three years.

Christian Munduate, UNICEF’s Country Representative in Nigeria, represented by Mr. Michael Juma, praised the state’s efforts.

He highlighted significant progress, including improved immunization rates, better PHC services, and reductions in maternal mortality from 55% to 49%. Under-five mortality also declined from 252 to 159 per 1,000 live births between 2018 and 2024.

Juma urged the state to sustain these gains by allocating more resources to the health sector.

The event also featured the official handover of three Hilux vans donated by GAVI to support healthcare operations in the state.
