Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost Igbo sociocultural organization, has reaffirmed its support for the leadership of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule.
In a statement released on Friday, January 24, by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the group declared Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The group also urged Governor Sim Fubara to avoid actions that could destabilize the state’s political climate and instead focus on fostering peace and unity within Rivers.
Ohanaeze commended the Assembly for its bold decision to override the Governor’s veto on three important bills: the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commission of Inquiry Bill, 2024.
“These crucial bills, aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of all citizens, especially the marginalized, were presented to the Governor over a month ago. By overriding the veto in line with Section 100(6) of the Constitution, the legislators have upheld their constitutional duties and reaffirmed the democratic principles that guide our governance,” the statement read.
The group expressed concern over Governor Fubara’s refusal to approve the bills, which were specifically designed to address the dire needs of the state’s underserved populations.
“The House’s decision to override the veto is both commendable and necessary in light of the Governor’s apparent neglect of the people’s needs,” Ohanaeze stated.
Additionally, Ohanaeze criticized the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by Governor Fubara to Victor Oko-Jumbo, Adolphus Timothy, and Sokari Goodboy, questioning their ability to effectively represent the needs of the people.
“These individuals, with their questionable track records, should not be entrusted with legislative responsibilities that require a deep understanding and commitment to the welfare of the populace,” the group argued.
The organization also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts in maintaining a balanced political environment in Rivers State. “This support is crucial in preventing a ‘one-man show’ under Governor Fubara’s administration,” they added.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated its confidence in Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, calling him a symbol of hope and resilience for the preservation of democracy in Nigeria.
The group strongly condemned any attempts by the executive to encroach on the legislature’s role, warning that such actions threaten democratic principles.
