An unknown man has been fatally electrocuted while attempting to steal wires from a transformer in the Akute area of Ogun State.
According to reports, the community has been dealing with ongoing issues of electrical wire theft and transformer damage.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday.
She explained that the man had climbed into the transformer compound and was electrocuted while trying to cut the wires.
The incident was reported to the authorities by Rasheed Ajagbe, the chairman of the Irewole community, who stated that the community had been struggling with frequent vandalism of the transformer.
Around 7:00 a.m. on Friday, Ajagbe received a call to inspect the transformer and went there with other community officials. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of the unidentified man, who had been electrocuted while attempting to vandalize the transformer.
The statement mentioned, “When they arrived at the transformer house, they found the lifeless body of an unknown individual who had been electrocuted while attempting to cut the wires.”
Odutola noted that police detectives promptly visited the scene to investigate, take photographs, and gather evidence.
The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was contacted, and the body was taken to the General Hospital Ifo for autopsy and preservation.
