The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has stated that its officers have the power to break into any house or place if the officers are convinced that an offence is being perpetrated in such places.
This is as the Force also announced plans to investigate the conduct of officers captured in a viral video that has sparked widespread debate.
The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows policemen forcefully entering a location while wearing masks and unconventional attire.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF Public Relations Officer, addressed the situation in a statement on Saturday, emphasizing the need for clarity and accountability.
“Let’s clarify an issue here. The police have the power to break into any house or place where they are reasonably convinced an offence is being committed.
“That is understandable. But I am not too okay with their dressing and appearance,” Adejobi said.
He expressed concern over the officers’ unconventional attire, stating that it raised questions about proper protocol.
“It is improper dressing. Policemen are not allowed to wear masks or tie headgear. These are two issues we need to iron out,” he added.
Adejobi also questioned the justification for the officers’ actions.
“What is the offence of the people to have warranted breaking in, and why this dressing?” he asked.
The PPRO revealed that efforts are underway to identify the officers and investigate the incident.
“I wish I knew the location so that we could direct these questions to the men involved.
“However, I have shared the video with the PPROs to locate the men. We need to investigate the scene captured in the video,” he stated.
The incident has reignited public discourse about police professionalism and adherence to standard operating procedures in the country.
The NPF has assured Nigerians that findings from the investigation will be made public, and any officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.
