The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has launched an initial assessment to gauge the financial damage caused by the fire that ravaged the Kara Yan Katako market on Wednesday.
Mustapha Umar, the director of relief and rehabilitation at SEMA, shared this update while speaking to journalists in Sokoto.
He explained that a comprehensive damage assessment would take place on Friday, which would provide a more accurate estimate of the losses and help mobilize assistance for the affected traders.
Umar noted that the management of Kara market was currently unable to provide an immediate assessment of the fire’s financial impact.
Earlier, Rilwanu Bello, the market’s chairman, described the fire as catastrophic, confirming that the losses were substantial.
He also mentioned that local emergency teams faced significant challenges in controlling the blaze.
The fire, which began around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, destroyed over 500 shops in the market.
