Senator Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has passed away at the age of 82.

The sad news was announced on Thursday night by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang through a statement from his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

The statement described Useni as a distinguished elder statesman who died on January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing its significance to Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation as a whole.

The governor praised Useni’s remarkable career and unwavering dedication to public service, noting his substantial contributions to Nigeria’s security and political development.

Useni was celebrated for his efforts to foster peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.

Useni’s illustrious career spanned various high-ranking roles, including Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.

Following his retirement from the military, he ventured into politics, where he continued to serve Nigeria.

He held the position of Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and, in 2015, was elected Senator for Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor Mutfwang highlighted Useni’s enduring legacy of selflessness, compassion, and generosity, commending his lifelong commitment to the well-being of others.

He stated, “General Useni’s tireless contributions to the military, politics, and his community will forever remain etched in the hearts of those he touched.”

On behalf of Plateau State, the governor extended condolences to the late senator’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and all mourning his loss.

He prayed for divine comfort and strength for the family and the nation during this difficult time.
