FG sets 2027 deadline for fully computer-based exams

The Federal Government has set a goal to fully implement computer-based testing (CBT) for all examinations by 2027.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the inauguration of the Committee on Improvement of Quality Examinations in Nigeria, held in Abuja on Thursday.

Dr. Alausa outlined the committee’s mandate, which includes addressing critical challenges in the education sector, standardizing examination practices, and ensuring fairness and quality in assessments.

He stressed the government’s determination to combat examination malpractices and enhance the integrity of the nation’s educational evaluation system.

The minister acknowledged that examination malpractices are a complex issue requiring a comprehensive approach.

He noted that students are not the sole offenders, as parents, teachers, school principals, and even supervisors play roles in perpetuating malpractice.

“Tackling exam leakages and malpractice demands collective effort. Parents often encourage their wards, while some teachers, principals, and examination supervisors contribute to the problem,” he said.

Dr Alausa emphasized the importance of technology in achieving the 2027 target, stating, “By 2027, we aim for all our examinations to be computer-based.

Leveraging technology is essential to achieving this goal.”

He added that the committee would also address local practices, such as candidate swapping, to ensure a more transparent and efficient system.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize the education sector and uphold the credibility of Nigeria’s examination processes.
