The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has invested over N300 billion in the development of satellite towns in the FCT.
Wike made this revelation on Wednesday during the inauguration of the nine-kilometre Paikon Kore – Ibwa Road in Gwagwalada, within the Gwagwalada Area Council.
Wike explained that this investment, which spanned from January 2024 to January 2025, reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to not only advancing Abuja city but also ensuring the growth of surrounding satellite towns.
He highlighted that more than N50 billion of the total sum was allocated to Gwagwalada Area Council alone.
Among the key projects, N8.5 billion was spent on the rehabilitation of the Paikon Kore – Ibwa Road, while N22 billion has been set aside for the construction of the Aguma Palace – Market – Radio Nigeria Road, expected to be completed and inaugurated in May 2025.
Additionally, N16.5 billion was invested in upgrading five secondary schools in Gwagwalada, including the School for the Gifted and Government Secondary Schools in Gwagwalada, Anagada, Tungan Maji, and Giri.
Wike emphasized that, in just one year, the Tinubu administration had committed over N300 billion to developing the satellite towns, dispelling claims that the government’s focus was solely on the city center.
During his address, the minister also promised further infrastructure development, including the construction of the Ibwa Bridge, following a request from local leaders.
The bridge has become a priority due to the frequent flooding that hampers students’ access to schools during the rainy season.
The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the newly inaugurated road and work collaboratively to ensure continued development in the future.
Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, the coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department, provided additional details on the Paikon Kore – Ibwa Road project, noting that the contract had been awarded to Setraco Nigeria Ltd in January 2024.
He stated that the road would enhance local businesses and connect communities, fostering sustainable development in the region.
Local leaders, including Gwagwalada’s vice chairman, Saidu Zuba, praised the significant improvements in infrastructure and security under Wike’s leadership, calling his efforts a blessing to the residents.
