IGP orders officers to stop wearing dark glasses in uniform, vows to punish violators

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting police officers from wearing dark glasses while in uniform.

This order, which takes immediate effect, was communicated via a wireless message dated January 21, 2025, and sent to all zonal and state commands of the Nigeria Police Force.

The memo, with reference number CB:4001/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.121/104, was obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday.

The directive warns that any officer found violating the instruction will face strict disciplinary measures.

The message noted that wearing dark glasses in uniform is unprofessional and tarnishes the image of the force.

The communique stated, “The Inspector General of Police has observed the widespread practice of personnel wearing dark glasses while in uniform.

“This behaviour is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the Force. Effective immediately, all police personnel are directed to desist from this practice.

“Any violation will result in severe disciplinary action. Ensure this is communicated during lectures and strictly enforced.”

Officers across the country have been instructed to prioritize compliance with the new directive.
