Farasime Village, situated near the Owode Apa border in Badagry West, Lagos State, descended into turmoil on Thursday as a violent clash broke out between Nigerian Navy personnel and local youths.
According to Sahara Reporters, the altercation reportedly began early in the day when naval officers launched an operation to apprehend individuals allegedly smuggling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, across the border to Cotonou.
A resident, speaking to journalists from the safety of his home, recounted the tense situation.
According to him, the youths resisted the Navy’s attempt to carry out arrests, prompting the officers to open fire.
The ensuing exchange of gunfire has left the community in a state of panic.
Fearing for his life, the resident shared, “I am not sure of my safety. The Navy came to arrest smugglers, but the youths resisted, and now they are shooting.
“My house is by the roadside, and youths have set a fire to block the road. I don’t engage in smuggling, but I am very scared.”
Attempts to obtain a response from the Nigerian Navy regarding the incident were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
