15 dead in multi-vehicle crash on Ilorin-Jebba expressway

A devastating collision involving a trailer and a passenger vehicle on the accident-prone Oko Olowo axis of the Ilorin-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State has claimed the lives of at least 15 people.

The accident, which occurred on Wednesday around 5:35 p.m., left several others injured.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the trailer, with registration number AYE 218 XC, collided head-on with a vehicle registered as TTN 556 XA.

Reports indicate that one of the vehicles was transporting both human passengers and livestock from Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, to Ogbomoso in Oyo State, while the trailer was en route from Lagos to Kano.

Emergency responders and officers from the ‘G’ Division Police Command, Oloje, arrived promptly to manage the situation.

Injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, while the deceased were retrieved by their families.

Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has yet to release an official statement, a senior officer confirmed through a phone interview that reckless driving and excessive speeding likely contributed to the tragic crash.

A video of the aftermath, shared by a rescuer, captured harrowing scenes of the overturned trailer and multiple lifeless bodies scattered on the road.

The video also included an emotional plea urging the government to address the recurring accidents on this dangerous stretch of road.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
