Details emerge from Tinubu’s meeting with Fubara, Wike, Ogoni leaders in Abuja

Details of a meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogoni leaders held on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, have been revealed.

The meeting, attended by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and other key stakeholders, focused on peace, justice, and sustainable development in Ogoniland.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu assured the Ogoni delegation of his administration’s commitment to addressing their concerns and fostering reconciliation.

“We cannot rewrite history, but we can address past injustices and move forward. Healing cannot occur if we remain angry,” Tinubu said.

The President tasked the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, with coordinating ongoing negotiations and emphasized the need for inclusive consultation and mutual understanding. Tinubu also directed ministers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the Rivers State Government to cooperate with the NSA’s office to ensure progress on the mandate.

He urged the delegation to promote peace, development, and environmental restoration in Ogoniland.

“Go back home, consult widely, and ensure inclusivity. We must make this journey worthwhile by bringing positive change to Ogoniland,” Tinubu added.

Reflecting on his past relationship with Ogoni leaders during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the region.

Governor Fubara thanked the President for his continued support and inclusive approach.

He described the meeting as a follow-up to the President’s earlier directive to engage stakeholders.

“Today’s meeting reinforces our collective respect for the President’s leadership and sets a timeline for resuming oil production in Ogoniland,” Fubara said.

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu commended the Ogoni people for their trust in the President’s vision, emphasizing that every voice and interest would be considered in the ongoing discussions.

King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, the Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, also expressed the community’s readiness to collaborate on solutions to the region’s longstanding challenges.

Noble attendees included Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, and Lee Maeba, alongside Chief Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, and Monsignor Pius Kii. Others present were the NNPCL’s Group CEO Mele Kyari, Minister of Environment Balarabe Abba, Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh, and Minister of Information Idris Mohammed.

The meeting continued at the NSA’s office after the session with the President.
