Tensions mount in Ondo over Oba selection dispute

Must read

Alade Idanre in Ondo State is witnessing heightened tensions over the selection of a new Oba, as disagreements persist among ruling houses and local groups.

Otunba Benson Akingbaso was chosen nine months ago by the Ifa oracle and approved by the kingmakers as the Oba-elect. However, his official installation has been delayed due to opposition from certain factions.

The former Oba, Oba Olusegun Akinbola, passed away in 2020, and the process to appoint his successor has been fraught with controversy.

Akingbaso’s selection is being challenged by the Akinnadeju family, who claim it is their turn to produce the next Oba, despite their disputed status as a ruling house.

The Regent, Chief Oladipo Akinsowon, has warned the state government that the delay in recognizing Akingbaso could escalate the crisis.

Despite repeated calls for intervention, the state government has yet to formalize his position.

Akingbaso, through his lawyer Akinyemi Omoware, urged patience and emphasized the need to await the court’s decision.

He accused the Akinnadeju family of attempting to force their way into the ruling houses, which he claims they are not officially part of.

The Akinnadeju family, represented by Chief Sola Ebiseni, argues that a 1995 court judgment supports their claim as a ruling house. They insist that Prince Ayo Akinnadeju should succeed his late brother as the next Oba.

With the legal battle ongoing and no resolution in sight, the community remains divided, and concerns are growing about potential unrest if the matter is not resolved soon.
