Residents rush to scoop oil as another tanker overturns in Niger

In videos seen by AFRIPOST, residents of Bida town in Niger State were scooping groundnut oil from a tanker that overturned near the Shafa filling station in the Esso area.

According to local sources, the overturned tanker in Bida was initially mistaken for a fuel carrier due to its proximity to a filling station.

However, it was later confirmed to be transporting groundnut oil.

Residents were seen using buckets and jerry cans to collect the spilt oil despite the risks associated with such incidents.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning, comes just days after a tragic tanker explosion on the Dikko-Maje Road near Badeggi filling station in Suleja Local Government Area that claimed 98 lives.

AFRIPOST had reported that while efforts were being made to transfer Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the overturned tanker to another vehicle, an explosion occurred around 9:00 am, leading to a massive fire.

The blaze caused extensive damage, leaving charred remains and destruction in its wake.

While AFRIPOST attempted to reach the Niger Police Command Spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, for comment, he was unavailable, as his phone remained unreachable throughout Tuesday morning.

This incident highlights a recurring issue in Nigeria, where individuals have lost their lives while attempting to recover goods from fallen tankers.

In October 2024, 105 people were killed and 70 injured in a similar tanker explosion in Jigawa State.

Authorities and safety experts continue to emphasize the dangers of approaching overturned tankers, regardless of their contents, to prevent further tragedies.
