Man remanded over alleged assassination plot against petroleum minister

A 35-year-old man, Susaine Morgan, has been remanded in custody for allegedly plotting to assassinate Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, on New Year’s Day in Bayelsa State.

Morgan is also facing charges of illegal possession of two AK-47 rifles.

According to reports, the suspect was apprehended at the minister’s residence in Ekeremor town, where he was allegedly part of a group planning an armed robbery and attempted kidnapping.

Police were alerted to the presence of armed individuals posing as visitors to the minister’s home.

During the arrest, Morgan was found with a bag containing firearms, while other suspects reportedly escaped by blending into the crowd, Vanguard reports.

A court has granted a 30-day detention order to enable the police to complete their investigation and track down six additional suspects who remain at large.
