Decomposing body found near stadium sparks alarm in Makurdi

The discovery of a decomposing corpse near Aper Aka Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State, has raised environmental and safety concerns among local residents.

The body, found adjacent to the Benue State Police Officers’ Mess and close to the Benue State Education Quality Assurance (BEQA) office, was reportedly left at the location over the weekend.

AFRIPOST gathered that as of Tuesday morning, it had not been removed, leaving the decaying remains to attract flies and emit a foul odour, creating a public health hazard.

While most residents avoided commenting on the situation, a government worker in the area, speaking anonymously, stated that the body appeared to have been dumped on Friday night.

“We found the corpse with blood splattered on the stadium fence. The man’s body had been burned, and his hands were tied.

“By Sunday, the smell became unbearable, and today it’s even worse. If nothing is done by tomorrow, this area will be uninhabitable,” the source said.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue Command, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed that the police were aware of the incident and had initiated necessary steps.

According to Anene, preliminary intelligence suggests the deceased was a suspected thief who was overpowered during an attempted robbery.

Witnesses reportedly saw individuals struggling with him before he was fatally struck with an object, while his accomplices managed to escape.

Anene also noted that the deceased’s attire further indicated he might have been involved in criminal activities.

She assured that relevant agencies had been contacted to evacuate the corpse.
