Suspended Catholic priest struggled with loneliness before marriage – Sister reveals

Must read

Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, a Catholic priest from the Warri Diocese, recently renounced his celibacy vows and priestly calling to marry in Dallas, Texas, USA. His decision, which led to his suspension from priestly duties, has sparked widespread reactions.

Fr. Oghenerukevwe wed his partner, Dora Chichah, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas on December 29, 2024, without obtaining formal release from his canonical obligations.

Following this, the Catholic Church issued a suspension notice, citing Canon 1394 Section 1, which prohibits clerics from entering marriage.

The suspension was outlined in a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated January 16, 2025.

It was signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ewherido, and the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, confirming that Oghenerukevwe had incurred a latae sententiae suspension for marrying without proper dispensation.

However, new details have emerged explaining the reasons behind his decision. According to Mary Okanatotor, his biological sister, the now-suspended priest struggled with loneliness and mental health issues during his time in ministry.

In a social media comment, Mary defended her brother, stating, “This was the best decision for him. He faced mental health challenges for a long time and struggled to cope with the loneliness that comes with priesthood. Unfortunately, we, his family, could not be there physically to support him during his difficulties.”

Mary further clarified that her brother’s marriage was not conducted in secret, as he had informed the diocese of his intentions beforehand. She concluded with words of gratitude for those showing support during this challenging period for the family.
