One dead, several homes destroyed in communal clash in Ebonyi

A violent clash in the Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege community in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State left one person dead and led to the destruction of at least 10 homes on Saturday night.

Sources revealed that several people sustained injuries when suspected assailants attacked the community. The dispute appears to have been between the residents of Omege Agalagu and Ukwuinyima, though the precise cause of the violence remains unclear.

One local, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, suggested the clash was triggered by an incident in November 2024, when a woman allegedly murdered and raped was buried, creating tension between the communities.

The source also reported that more than 10 houses were destroyed by fire, and significant property damage was caused. “The government should step in to address this escalating situation,” the local stated.

Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Police spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the violence began after a fight broke out between two youths from the rival communities. One of the youths from Omege was fatally stabbed and later died from his injuries at the hospital.

The victim’s death sparked retaliation from his community, leading to the destruction of several mud huts with thatched roofs. However, the police quickly intervened, stopping further damage.

Ukandu assured that officers have been deployed to maintain order, and an investigation into the incident is underway. The individual responsible for the stabbing has been arrested.

The situation has been largely brought under control, with police continuing to monitor the area to ensure peace.
