NCC okays tariff adjustment requests by telecom operators

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved tariff adjustment requests from telecommunications operators, in line with its regulatory powers under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003.

This decision follows the recognition of prevailing market conditions and the need to adjust tariffs in response to increasing operational costs.

The approved adjustment, capped at 50% of current tariffs, is lower than the over 100% increases requested by some operators. This decision takes into account ongoing industry reforms that are expected to positively impact the long-term sustainability of the sector.

The tariff adjustments will remain within the limits set by the 2013 NCC Cost Study, and each request will be assessed individually, following the Commission’s standard approach to tariff reviews.

The new rates will be implemented in line with the recently issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.

Telecom tariffs have not changed since 2013, despite rising operational costs. The approved adjustments aim to close the gap between these costs and current tariffs while ensuring that service quality to consumers remains unaffected.

The changes will help operators maintain investments in infrastructure and innovation, leading to improved services, better network quality, enhanced customer service, and broader coverage.

This decision follows extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, addressing concerns while prioritizing the protection of telecom consumers and the industry’s sustainability.

The NCC is committed to supporting the thousands of indigenous vendors and suppliers critical to the telecom ecosystem.

Recognizing the financial strain on Nigerian households and businesses, the NCC has mandated that telecom operators implement these adjustments transparently, ensuring fairness and clear communication with the public.

Operators are also required to demonstrate tangible improvements in service delivery.
