EFCC berates social media support for officer’s alleged killer

Must read

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly condemned the social media support for Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, the man accused of killing one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu.

Salisu was killed on Friday while on duty to arrest suspected internet fraudsters in Anambra State.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the EFCC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Salisu and denounced the harmful and misleading narratives circulating online.

The statement, signed by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity, called it inappropriate to defend Ikechukwu’s actions, describing the shooting to death of Salisu as unjustifiable.

The EFCC also urged those spreading such narratives to show respect for Salisu’s family and the nation.

The tragic incident occurred when Salisu and his team went to a building in Awka, Anambra State, to apprehend internet fraudsters. While 37 suspects were arrested without incident, Ikechukwu, who was under suspicion, refused to open his door. When officers attempted to engage him, he opened fire, fatally injuring Salisu and wounding another officer.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission expresses its sorrow over the tragic loss of Assistant Superintendent Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was murdered on January 17, 2025, while performing his official duties by suspected fraudster Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu,” the statement read.

The EFCC further condemned the irresponsible online commentary surrounding the incident, stating, “It is unconscionable to trivialize the death of a brave officer who was performing his patriotic duties with such online sensationalism.”

The commission reiterated that there is no justification for the murderous act, and it highlighted that Ikechukwu had been involved in dubious online activities, including coding and the illegal sale of medical supplies.

Currently in police custody, Ikechukwu will face trial. The EFCC also warned that the growing threat of internet fraudsters poses serious risks to public safety and security.
