The Akwa Ibom State Government has confirmed a cholera outbreak in the Emeroke community, located in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Sunday, Dr. Patrick Essiet, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, disclosed that the State Epidemiologist has been deployed to the area to launch awareness campaigns aimed at controlling the outbreak.
Dr. Essiet urged residents to adopt preventive measures such as thorough handwashing after defecation and boiling drinking water before consumption. He also advised individuals experiencing symptoms like diarrhea or vomiting to seek prompt medical attention at nearby health facilities.
“The Ministry also reminds community leaders to enforce the government’s ban on open defecation to reduce the spread of cholera,” the statement emphasized.
To provide immediate relief, the State Government is mobilizing resources and supplies for the affected community, while working on long-term solutions to address the situation.
Samuel Nteogwuijah, Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Council, has assured residents of coordinated efforts to combat the outbreak. During a visit to Emmanuel General Hospital in Eket on Sunday, alongside his wife and other community leaders, he pledged to collaborate with the state government and relevant agencies to prevent further spread of the disease.
“Plans are in place to work with stakeholders to contain the spread of this deadly disease,” Nteogwuijah stated. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for his prompt response in directing health officials and agencies to intervene.
Health officials have begun assessments at secondary health facilities to determine the number of cases, as efforts to manage and contain the outbreak continue. Akwa Ibom Govt Declares Cholera Outbreak in Eastern Obolo Community
