TikTok halts services in U.S. as ban takes effect

Must read

TikTok ceased operations across the United States on Saturday night, disabling access to its app and website for millions of users.

The shutdown comes after a law banning the Chinese-owned platform was passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden last year.

Despite efforts to contest the ban, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the legislation, allowing it to take effect on January 20.

TikTok had announced it would shut down operations on Sunday, but services were terminated earlier, around 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday.

The company resisted attempts to force a sale to American investors, fueling speculation about its potential ties to Chinese intelligence operations.

Visitors to TikTok’s platform in the U.S. were greeted with a message stating, “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”

President-elect Donald Trump, set to assume office on January 20, has signaled that he may grant TikTok a 90-day extension to transfer ownership to American businesses.

The platform, which boasts over 170 million users in the U.S., could be allowed to resume operations if divestment conditions are met.
