Tanker explosion: IGP condoles with Niger, orders strengthening traffic divisions

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed condolences to the government and residents of Niger State following a tragic tanker explosion that occurred on January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP described the incident as devastating, confirming that over 73 lives were lost, several people were injured, and numerous shops and properties were destroyed.

The explosion was triggered when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire.

Emphasizing the need for road safety, the IGP warned against negligence and the disregard for traffic regulations, which he said are often the root causes of such tragedies.

He directed all State Commissioners of Police to bolster their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies to ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws and adherence to safety protocols.

The IGP also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives and property.

In his message, the IGP called on stakeholders, including transport operators and the public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their activities.

He also prayed for the souls of the departed and expressed hope that such incidents would not occur in the future.

The directive and condolences were issued in a statement from the Force Headquarters in Abuja on January 19, 2025.
