Lagos govt shuts down Smiley Kids Montessori school after pupil’s death

The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori, located in the Sangotedo area, following the tragic death of a two-year-old student, Rapheala Ogbodo, who drowned in the school’s swimming pool.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, has prompted an investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Ministry of Education’s Office of Education Quality Assurance.

In a post shared on Saturday, January 18, through its official X account, the Lagos State Government confirmed the school’s closure.

It also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its dedication to preventing similar tragedies.

The statement revealed: “The Lagos State Safety Commission is aware of the tragic swimming pool accident at Smiley Kids Montessori, Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, resulting in the unfortunate death of two-year-old Rapheala Ogbodo.

“Representatives from the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance have visited the site to conduct a preliminary investigation and determine the cause of the incident.

“The school remains closed while investigations continue.

“Meanwhile, the State Government expresses its deepest sympathy to the family of the victim and assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety standards to prevent future incidents.

“Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, emphasized the importance of adherence to safety regulations by school operators and caregivers to avoid such occurrences.

“He added that further updates would be provided once the investigation is concluded.”
