Fresh violent clashes in Ondo State have claimed the lives of 12 people, with six killed in a conflict at Gbalegi village and four others in a separate incident in Owo.

The Gbalegi violence occurred on Friday in the disputed area between Idanre and Akure, the state capital.

Rising tensions in the community culminated in an armed attack.

The victims were initially taken to a local police station before being transferred to a morgue in Akure.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed receiving a distress call about armed thugs mobilizing to attack Gbalegi residents.

Seven suspects were apprehended during the operation, and officers recovered charms, seven single-barrel guns, and live and spent ammunition.

A search of the surrounding bush areas revealed multiple bullet-ridden bodies.

Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami urged communities involved in boundary disputes to resolve issues through legal channels instead of resorting to violence.

“The Commissioner of Police advises caution in handling land-related disputes and encourages aggrieved parties to seek court intervention,” she stated.

On Sunday, January 12, another deadly clash broke out in Iwaro Akoko, involving youths from Oka Odo, Ebo, and Owake communities in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area.

Two people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries. Properties were destroyed, and injured residents were taken to the Federal Medical Center in Iwaro-Oka for treatment.

The police arrested 35 suspects in connection with the Iwaro Akoko clash, promising that those found guilty would face prosecution.

The unrest followed another violent incident in Owo, where a cult-related clash claimed four lives and left many others injured.
