Suspected internet fraudsters, known as “Yahoo boys,” have shot and killed an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and critically injured another in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The incident took place on Friday morning when the EFCC operatives, who had traveled from their zonal headquarters in Enugu, were carrying out an operation to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals.
The slain officer, an assistant superintendent, had recently passed a promotional examination.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
“Investigations into this unfortunate event are underway.
The suspect has been arrested, and the firearm recovered. More details will follow,” Ikenga said.
