President Tinubu reacts to governors’ decision on Tax Reforms

Must read

President Bola Tinubu has expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for endorsing four Tax Reform Bills currently under review by the National Assembly.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the governors for demonstrating strong leadership and fostering unity across regional, ethnic, and political divides to promote national development.

“Thursday’s fruitful engagement between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy reflects commendable collaboration between federal and state governments,” Tinubu stated.

The President praised Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, NGF Chairman, for rallying support among his counterparts to advance the tax bills, which aim to revitalize the economy and improve Nigeria’s investment appeal.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Progressive Governors Forum, Northern Governors Forum, and other groups for their bipartisan approach in resolving disputes surrounding the bills.

Tinubu emphasized that the proposed tax reforms are designed to prioritize the welfare of the poor, bolster economic competitiveness, and attract investments from both domestic and foreign sources.

Updating Nigeria’s outdated tax laws, he noted, is critical to achieving these goals.

He further highlighted the importance of the dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee, citing it as a testament to the value of constructive engagement in addressing disagreements.

Tinubu encouraged other stakeholders to participate in refining the bills through the legislative process.

The President called on the National Assembly to accelerate the passage of the Tax Reform Bills to enable Nigeria to reap the benefits of the reforms promptly.
