The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed an attack on Kankara General Hospital that left a doctor and another health worker injured, while three others were abducted.
In a statement, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and unacceptable. He emphasized that healthcare workers, who play crucial roles in society, should never be targeted.
Police spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq, disclosed that the gunmen stormed the hospital premises on Tuesday, January 14, armed with AK-47 rifles, and fired sporadically to instill fear. In the attack, a doctor, Murtala Saleh, sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh, while another victim, Kamala Suleiman, was injured in the knee. Both are currently receiving medical care and are in stable condition.
The assailants also abducted three individuals during the incident. Security operatives engaged the gunmen in a shootout, but the bandits managed to flee with the abductees.
The police assured residents that efforts are underway to rescue the kidnapped victims and apprehend the perpetrators. The Commissioner of Police called for calm and urged citizens to continue their daily activities, reaffirming the commitment of security agencies to safeguard lives and property in the state.
