The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the sudden death of a two-year-old pupil at Smiley Kids Montessori School, Sangotedo, Lagos Island.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, January 15, and was brought to public attention by the grieving mother, identified as Ellla@AbiaPrincess_X on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
According to the mother, her daughter left home healthy for school but tragically returned lifeless.
While initial accounts suggested drowning in the school’s swimming pool, the mother has raised suspicions of electrocution.
She alleges the school may have staged the scene to appear as a drowning incident, citing the presence of a high barricade around the pool that would be difficult for a two-year-old to scale.
In her emotional plea, she shared photos of her late daughter and the pool, urging authorities to investigate and warning other parents about the school.
“Smiley School International, Sangotedo, Lagos Island, please bring her back. We cannot bear this alone,” she wrote.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has assured the family of a thorough investigation.
Its Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Titilayo Adeniyi-Vivour, confirmed that the Lagos State Task Force on Safeguarding and Child Protection has visited the school as part of a fact-finding mission.
The task force includes representatives from various state agencies, such as the Office of Education Quality Assurance, the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and the Lagos State Safety Commission.
Adeniyi-Vivour also revealed that the government is collaborating with the Ogombo Police Division and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, to support the criminal investigation and potential prosecution.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved family. We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served,” Adeniyi-Vivour said via DSVA’s official X handle.
