A potential blackout is looming in parts of Abuja following the vandalism of underground electricity cables by thieves, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The company confirmed on Friday, January 17, that the stolen cables, which supply power to areas such as Maitama, Wuse, and Garki, were targeted by vandals.
Ndidi Mbah, the Public Affairs Manager for TCN, stated in a press release that the vandals attacked the 132kV transmission line and underground cables that transport a significant portion of electricity to the Central Area Transmission Substation in Katampe.
As a result, eight distribution feeders serving the central areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were also impacted, causing a 60% disruption in electricity supply.
Mbah urged residents of Abuja to remain patient as the company works to restore power to the affected locations.
She explained that the vandalism likely occurred near the Millennium Park area of the city, with the perpetrators stealing 40 meters of 1x500mm conductor from two 132kV transmission lines.
The outage has disrupted power supply to key areas, including Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.
